Hairy sunflower and woodland sunflower (H. strumosus) are very similar. They both occur in dry to mesic oak woodlands, deciduous forest edges, and in brushy edges along streams, fields, and roadsides. This species sometimes grows in drier sites than woodland sunflower. Does well in oak and pine woodlands where it spreads by rhizomes.
